Eteläesplanadi 14

Renovation of the facade, entrances, stairwells, and signage in a heritage property

New, unified identity for a prestigious property

Located in the heart of Helsinki city centre, this heritage property received a new, cohesive appearance under the guidance of our property developers. Eteläesplanadi 14, also known as the Ahlström House, is a building designed by the architectural firm Jung & Jung, completed in 1937. It underwent renovations in 2009, and our assignment was to elevate the property’s aesthetic while respecting the architecture of the building.

Our work in this project:

  • Lobby and stairwell facelift
  • Signage design
  • Brand in space
  • Lighting design
  • Inclusive and interactive co-development
  • Survey planning and result summary

The aim of the collaboration was to update and unify the overall appearance of the property, including the street facade, entrances, stairwells, and signage. To achieve these goals, the design team focused on the lighting canopies by the entrances, interior lighting, textiles, fixed furnishings, signage, and other amenities.

The location, history, and architecture
shaped the way of designing

Users, tenants, and the property management participated in the renovation by responding to a survey regarding contemporary needs, improving user-friendliness, and enhancing the visual identity. The quality classification was driven by coherence and timelessness without compromising material quality. The high standards were ensured through impressive, durable, and low-maintenance material choices. Well-preserved surfaces and functional solutions in the heritage property were naturally utilized as they were.
Our designers viewed the uniqueness of the site as an exciting challenge, and the objectives of the renovation were achieved through close and respectful dialogue among all project stakeholders. We received praise for our holistic and professional perspective – particular attention was drawn to the cohesive design and the vibrant appearance of the lighting canopy.

As part of the 170th anniversary celebration, the company updated not only its visual identity but also the entrance, signage, and visual graphics at Eteläesplanadi 14. Kakadu designed an elegant update that respects the value of the property. The property owner was very satisfied with the outcome.
